If you are going to jump off a bridge, make sure you know how deep the water is.

Sometimes it's better to stand on a bank and dip a toe in, or paddle about a bit. It will make you happier.  

Get what you want when circumstances permit, but without paying as heavily for it as the past painful experience.

The water may look lovely now.  It is likely that it will turn out to be cold, murky, muddy, clammy and invariably wet.
