values not issues

"Creating relationships is the most basic tenet, the most basic common denominator. Really strong community organizations are actually based on values, not issues. Issues come and go. That's not to say issues aren't important. Because working on issues is a means by which people can aspire to live their values. But working on issues isn't the only thing you can do. When you create relationships, people have common values."

So I must listen well. What engages people to become involved in something and actually spend their own time, energy, influence, and money, is to feel heard, to actually feel listened to.
