Silver Service

Silver service is the name given to a method of table service in the United Kingdom. This usually includes serving food at the table. It is a technique of transferring food from a service dish to the guest's plate from the left.

It is often performed by a silver service "waiter" using service forks and spoons from the diner's left. In France, this kind of service is known as "English Service."

Features of silver service

Silver service food is always served from the left, drinks from the right.
Meals are served to the diner from platters, not plated in the kitchen.
The guest to the host's right is served first. (Usually a female guest)
Service continues clockwise.
Plates are cleared from the right, glasses from the right; again starting with the guest to the host's right.
Glasses are stacked in a diagonal to the right and away, with wine (by course) in order, and then lastly, water glass in front.

A modification of Silver Service is known as Butler Service. In Butler Service the diner helps himself from a serving plate held by the waiter (butler). Traditionally, this type of service was used on Sunday evenings when the waiting staff had the evening off and the butler helped out at dinner.

friendship is precious

Min came over to have lunch with me. She bought a book about Warren Buffett from Kelly & Walsh. She is growing up and has acquired interest in reading.

Friendship treasured is a treasure. We had dinner together and chatted freely and heartily. An enjoyable evening after a hard day's work.

Times Square.

X'mas magic

Festivals bring along magic. We feel days are marked with sentiments and uniqueness. We do special things to each other and life becomes more meaningful.

Min went to Armani Bar, Charter House; on Dec 22 she went to Beijing Club, Lan Kwai Fong. Youth is unbeatable. She is enjoying her social life. Nita went to midnight mass at St Joseph's Church, Garden Road with Feheley.

Home alone.

Irene sent me a bottle of champagne and a fruit basket. Andrew gave me Sogo coupons. V bought me and Min packages to Bangkok earlier. I got 2 bottles of red wine at the lucky draw in the office X'mas party. I received a X'mas cake and a set of Crabtree & Evelyn skincare product - lavender.

Gungung, Porpor, J & J are all happy with our presents. The maids as well. When we bring happiness to others, we are the angels of the world.

So glad that I am still breathing comfortably. 2 nights ago, I thought I would face another knock on the door. Too scary.

anis b cries a lot

Her crying gets on our nerves. Who should be a parent if one is not prepared enough. A great task to raise a child.

Merry X'mas!

Lots of exchange & lucky draw of presents. I give and I receive. That is how love & care are generated amongst people.

Joy & peace to everybody!

a time for mother & child exclusively

We chatted, read, ate, shopped and laughed. We exchanged views on people and events. It is happiness, absolutely. Thai food, massage, Skytrain, boating and looking around. Siam Paragon. Sala Daeng. Baan Karitha & Gallery. So many gays freely holding hands or kissing or dining together.

High tea at the Peninsula. Jim Thompson. Dusit Thani Hotel.

Friday, December 18, 2009

how absurd!

Comfortably seated in a limousine in the company of a loving daughter, cooled by a towel and drinking bottled mineral water, heading for the Peninsula Hotel, anticipating to have a massage for the whole afternoon and a Thai dinner in a 5-star hotel in the evening, I started to complain that Fate could be kinder to me. The trip has been prepaid and so is the limousine for return journey. How absurd!

who is she?

Is she lovable?

charlie brown's girl friend

feel all your feelings

Life means experiencing strong emotions; fear, delight, sadness and joy. Don't try to run from the ones we don't like; experience them all. Even feelings like fear, guilt and anger tell us things about ourselves, give us energy to change, and remind us what we consider important. Acknowledge painful emotions; recognize that they are part of us. It is not painful emotions that are bad; it's denying we have them.

Lorraine & Wenxi have gone back to Singapore. I am going to Bangkok tomorrow with Min. Life is a journey comprising many journeys. Merry trips to myself!

Yummy dumplings & noodles in soup.

Min has come home. I was in the airport Friday night & Saturday evening. J J & Porpor dined at my home after fetching Min.

Anis went to baby class in the morning and the Ocean Park in the afternoon. AVA visited the Great Grandma for dinner. Anis b will be a main feature in my retirement life.

I got the layer cake from Singapore.

home sweet home

A nice time in Shanghai. Xiaolongbao. Hairy crabs. Noodles. Cheungsam. Embroidery on clothings and table cloths and pillow/cushion cases. I see the fine details in the old time. I see the modern hi-tech application. The East meets the West here and merges with sophistication. Jade, pearls and silk. Bars for the foreigners. Japanese find their place, too.

A fascinating city for me.

But it is so comfy to be home again. I have seen my baby Anis this morning. She is so cute. I was afraid she might have forgotten me. Luckily, she has not.

We bought lots of things. I like my double-sided woollen shawl most, one side rosy pink with embroidered peonies and another side black.

I bought 2 cashmere jackets from Shiliupu. Lots of fun bargaining.

We went to the Museum and Xintiandi. We went to Lorraine's office. We all like the Hotel very much. It was indeed hospitality management. We did morning exercise there in the garden.

I missed everybody whom I love.

papa in haven of hope

We 3 visited Papa with Mamma. He was absolutely pleased though he kept on saying we need not worry about him. I gave his head, neck & shoulders some good massage for over 20 minutes and Lorraine massaged his legs and feet. Blood circulation would help him to have a quality sleep.

This morning, we skipped pingpong. Marga teased my dark purple down jacket old-fashioned. Lorraine complained about the Paus having no wi-fi at home. We then discussed intensely what to wear in Shanghai. Cannot find a warmer Sunday! Just love it. I will wear the new down jacket - green & white checks. My sis said women in Shanghai are certainly trendy people. We should not be left behind. Right!!! I will bring my camera.

Taliana & CC Club

I went to Taliana again on Saturday morning and spent the rest of the day in CC Club. I lost in the mj game. I taught them to play to 4 wildcards - a blank tile. The game had become more exciting for the 4 intelligent women. It is beleived that mj game can keep our brains working more actively and with fun. Hence, we will be entering our old age with wits and happiness. The wisdom of Chinese. If we can maintain a group of friends, have casual chats and share food cheerfully, it is indeed a good programme for the body and the mind. The money involved must be well affordable and players' attitude must be friendly. Bad losers must be out.

Lorraine has arrived late night and Wenxi this afternoon. We will have tea/dimsum for lunch in celebration of Mike's birthday in Nikko Hotel. A month for birthday parties and holidays.

I am thinking what to wear for my trip in Shanghai tomorrow. I know I am lucky!

Saturday, December 05, 2009

fun time

Parties, presents & pleasure trips.

Busy in the office. Busy in social events as well. Haircut at Taliana by David.

Dan Dan noodles, chicken with dumpling soup in casserole, deep fried sweet & sour fish in squirrel style, sliced loin in spicy Sichuan source and the steamed Wax gourd with chicken soup (grape like). Interesting chats from different professions and trades.

Will play mj at CCC with Kingsui group.

bronze dye & teflon dye pasta

Much stimulated by Min's mentioning of pasta, I seek from internet some knowledge about the subject.

It is always nice to retain the curiosity of a child.

Italy is a country for pasta - so many names, shapes, flour and modes of manufacturing. Source to go with. Fresh and dry - with or without eggs and naturally dried or machine-dried. People from the northern and central have different likes from those of the southern. Some families run the business for generations.

Imagine some bowtie shapes pasta in an array of colours. Spinach green and squid ink black and the natural wheat white.

In cooking, the Italian expression of "al dente" describes pasta cooked enough to be firm but not soft; resistant to the bite but not hard nor sticky. It is considered to be the ideal form of cooked pasta. Using plenty of salt helps achieve the "al dente".

Yummy food is my salvation. Pleasant companions are unbeatable. 1 + 1 is perfect. Hurray!

Star of Bombay - 182 carat

In gemmology, an asterism is an optical phenomenon displayed by some rubies, sapphires & other gems, e.g. star garnet, of an enhanced reflective area in the shape of a "star" on the surface of a cabochon cut from the stone.

a man & a woman

"She must know I love her; I wouldn't spend all weekend building her a bookcase if I didn't love her."

"He spent all weekend outside building that damn bookcase to get away from me - he doesn't love me."

"She must know I love her; I wouldn't have so much hesitation before I kissed her if I didn't love her. I treasure the relationship and care for her feelings."

"It took him so long to kiss me - he doesn't love me."

"She must know I love her; I wouldn't have offered to cook her noodles at home if I didn't love her."

"He is reluctant to dine out with me. He prefers to save money - he doesn't love me."

amethyst is my birthstone

Morning walk is a therapy to the body and soul. Along the seaside. Breakfast at McCafe. Latte & sandwich with mayo egg & tomato.

Dimsum with Mamma, Mike & his family.

I have been listening to the album "faithfully" by Anita Mui for the whole afternoon.

I will be dining at home by myself. Some beef ribs from Jusco and a Campbell soup.

Is loneliness enjoyable? Yes, solitutde is a retreat from the worldly hustle.

I have bought a ring with amethyst and another one with prehnite. Both are set in silver.

Odalisque

By Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836 to 1911), a French figure painter. Many of his paintings are single figures of beautiful women.
Odalisque was a female slave in an Ottoman seraglio. She was an assistant or apprentice to the concubines and wives, and she might rise in status to become one of them. Most odalisques were part of the Imperial Harem, that is the household of the Sultan.

ttul

"talk to you later." That is the usual acronym that Min uses to end our chats. The younger generation has so many of these, especially for online communication. Language grows from culture, geographical regions and different ages and classes.

Meryl Streep has a song "The Winner Takes It All" from the movie/musical "Mamma Mia". I listen to it for a thousand times. I have been thinking who is the Winner, what is a Winner, takes What and what is All.

How much in life have I won? Anyone, anything is a "must to be won"? For what? Anyone wants to win me? What happens if I fail? How many times have I failed? With the hind sight, was I stupid in pursuing at all? Anyone, anything right in front of me to be won?

To win means to be victorious in a battle, contests or a race; to obtain or achieve something as the result of a bet, competition or race; to obtain or reach something especially as a resulf of hard work or perseverance.

The Winner Takes It All! What happens to the Loser? Who is the Loser? Why join the game?

sociable & lucky

Seek people who respect and appreciate you, and respect and appreciate people whom you choose to be with. Be around happy people - moods are contagious. Let others infect you with their happiness; don't bring them down.

Unlucky people are tense and anxious and not relaxed enough to notice unexpected opportunities. To be lucky, we have to trust in luck; trust that life is on our side. Have faith that good things can and do happen.

Lucky people listen to their intuition and respect and act on hunches. They usually have an optimistic outlook and try lots of strategies to get a positive outcome, thereby transforming bad luck into good.

To be sociable and have good luck are my daily tasks. :)

diamond hill

After pingpong, Marga & I treated Coach Wu with lunch at Waterloo Road. Shanghai cuisine. Then, we went to pay respect to Grandma. Nice to be on an ordinary Sunday. No one was there. No fires and smokes all over the place. We enjoyed the peaceful session with her.

Another Sunday leisure with curry pie, coconut tart and Lipton tea. How lucky I am to have a decent job and some relaxation every weekend.

Dinner at Mamma's home. Cant ask for more.

Herb tea, please cure my cough and give me a sound sound sleep tonight.

Obama visits China

It is as cold as 10 degrees C. I had bought an orange cardigan from Chinese Arts yesterday after work. 100% cashmere, made in China.

Min has bought a pair of UGG boots, chestnut classic. A pair trendy sheepskin boots, unisex and with wool lining. Synthetic soles and stylish to have tight and elastic jeans tucked in. UGG means ugly. Made in Australia. She feels great wearing that. As long as Mom can afford ........

After a night's sound sleep, I feel much better today.

the Rockies & Dublin, Belfast, N Ireland

Lee went to San Francisco and the Rockies in Canada. Betty went to Dublin and Belfast in N Ireland during her her stay in UK.

Taiji tutor said remaining motionless and quiet is a means to regaining energy. Very amazing.

Anis is learning fast. I am happy. I enjoy sitting in their Panasonic massage chair after dinner.

A nothing-to-do Saturday.

the bad cold is lingering

Much improved.

I need more rest. I need more relaxation. I need deletion of unpleasant experiences. I need doing nothing.

Min is happy with her dress and necklace. She promised me to work harder and spend less. See how much she will fulfill.

Anis is so cute. She brings along tremendous joy to all the people around.

Bravo!

Breakfast with fried eggs and bacon, bread/butter and coffee. Yummy!

Pingong.

I had a wonderful time with Porpor and Mayee at Sun Kong Theatre, North Point, to watch the Cantonese opera - A story of the Purple Jade Hairgrip. This is my masterpiece of translation. From 1:30 pm to 5:10 pm.

I met Agnes at QEH at 6 pm. We visited YM. He is fine. I am so glad to see him a healthier man than before. He will be discharged tomorrow.

Dinner at Yat Tung Heen with Agnes. When we walked towards Jordan MTR station, I saw Su & Robert strolling on Nathan Road hand in hand. How enviable.

pearl ring and pearl ear-rings

Miranda showed us her finger ring with 2 big pearls - one black and one gold-coloured, both of irregular shape. The ear-rings are of one black pearl each. Very very expensive.

Mj from 10 am to 1030 pm. A new acquaintance - Mrs Miu. I am definitely a member of the retirees' club or ah por club. Youth has no return.

skive & skiver

British slang: skive - avoid work, esp by staying away from where it is being done

skiver - person who skives

Play Truant: Stay away from school without permission

A game I never enjoyed. Could it be lots of fun? Was I self-disciplined or stupid?

daylight saving time

Min is 8 hours behind. Skype is so useful. She is having French lesson on Wednesday afternoon. Once she said something to me which I did not understand. She was amused and told me that is "I love you" in French.

Anis b has 4 teeth coming out. She is a happy baby.

Amused

Humour is one of the best and most psychologically mature and healthy defences. It is a good way of controlling negative emtoions. Even when in great emotional pain, humour helps us detach from an event and maintain our dignity and a sense of self. When we make jokes about a bad situation, we still feel the bad feelings, but we can control them better.

Play peek-a-boo with a baby. Get a puppy. Hang around with funny people. Rediscover the old silent movies. Try to see the world through the eyes of your favourite comic. Laughters make us more receptive to new experiences, creates emotional intimacy and encourages us to take ourselves less seriously.

Like yawning, laughter is contagious. So mix with happy people and maintain happy relationships with friends.

:)

monday is longer than sunday

When I was a teenager, school girls said this to indicate their underskirt is showing beneath the skirt or dress.

Now I mean it is really an exhasting working day after the relaxing weekend.

I failed to operate on e-banking. Wrong date for the first time and wrong currency for the second time. Stupid me.

Hurray! Chu told me Tam has gone through the surgery and waken up already.

We had a cake for Anis b - 11 months old. A has a fever. Van treated me for a massage on Thursday near PP3.

my darlings

Min wore a black vampire's cape with devil's horns and held a long walking stick. She put on very red lipstick on her full lips. Boys got pink strings and girls got blue strings. They had to give to someone they thought handsome or beautiful. Ivan gave Min his pink string. Then, Min started to collect as many as possible from other boys by asking them to give their strings to her. In the end, she got 14. Another girl got 20 and became the winner.

That is Min. So jolly!

Anis knows to cover half of her own face with a white handkerchief leaving one eye peeping. When Van pretends that she cannot find her and calls out baby's name, Anis will remove the handkerchief and starts to laugh.

2 angels - one in Guildford and one upstairs.

Wenxi - he calls himself Mosquito Food because there are so many mosquitoes in his flat. He discussed the definition of old and young with me. Lots of fun chatting with him.

Halloween

Min had effected payment for the tuition fees through internet at last. One month late. Luckily, no extra charge. She will be paying the boarding fees on Monday. She was going to buy a ticket for the Halloween party when I called her last night. Not yet fully recovered from her cold and sore throat. She enjoys this festival ever since she was a kid. I remember bringing her to Causeway Bay, Tsimshatsui & Lan Kwai Fong at different times upon her requests. The waitress in Marco Bistro drew on her face for several years. We took photographs of her. Creative & jolly Min.

Pingpong this morning, then Van will treat us to Miramar Hotel arcade for some yunnan food. Porpor & the Paus are invited as well.

My prayer for Tam.

Rainbow RIP

She slept at one night and then never woke up again. She had enjoyed the longevity of 100 years and the love and care of the whole family. Min used to play with her when she went to Auntie's place with Mom. During the recent years, Rainbow had lost one eye. Her figure had remained the same throughout the years. Today when I went there, I no longer heard the welcome barkings and we missed her scratches on the floor. The family had decided not to get a new one. Too sad to say good-bye.

Won $700.

But where is the Sun?

Anis b can recognize me after her 4 days' trip. Marvellous!

We had lunch with Tam at Wanchai. Congratulations to the new YeYe! Our support & our best wishes to him for everything. Life has to go on and we simply step forward.

I enjoy the massage chair at V's place.

I still love people despite some people may be wicked and some may be stupid.

The 39 Steps

The second version of John Buchan's classic thriller. The first one was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. An innocent man caught up in international intrigue. Taina Elg, a Finnish-American beauty. Ranking higher than Grace Kelly, as I judge. The scene of removing silk stockings with 2 hands handcuffed together - one of Taina Elg and one of Kenneth Moore - must be considered terribly sensational.

I could not catch every phrase and every move. I have been watching the DVD on computer again and again to understand more.

Porpor & I had dimsum at APM for lunch. I had dinner with Ella & Kar Yan at Taikooshing - Thai Pepper.

Min had gone to Uni of Nottingham for some sports event and stayed with Winki for the weekend. She is sick and staying in bed now. Poor girl.

Daisy

My hair needs high maintenance. That is why I have spent hours in the hairdresser's this morning. Consequentially and accidentally, I have watched a Korean movie for the first time in my life. There is a tv monitor in front of my chair- in fact one in front of every chair.

An interpol detective, a killer and a street artist. Romance, cold-blood, crime and innocence ......... 2 men who shoot and kill as their daily tasks fall in love with the same woman. She is an orphan much in want of love and care. A passionate and painful trio.

There is one point I find strange: they have never kissed. The tragic ending makes the story unforgettable.

So sad. Ji-hyun Jun looks pretty. But would it be all Korean women have gone through plastic surgery?

dinner at Mamma's home

She is always happy to cook for children and grandchildren.

Too salty. Too sugary. Always forgets to turn on the ventilation fan. Cannot relate details in daily life ........... No longer the Mamma in the kitchen we used to know.

But we all love her all the more as she gets aged. We understand every dinner she cooks counts.

Feel all your feelings

Life means experiencing strong emotions: fear, delight, sadness, joy. Don't try to run from the ones you don't like; experience them all. Even feelings like fear, guilt, and anger tell us things about ourselves, give us energy to change, and remind us what we consider important. Acknowledge painful emotions; reocognize that they are part of you.

Accept God's particular script for you. We all have to.

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

record your blessings

Keep a journal; it is a great pressure valve for emotions. It's your stage. Tell the audience exactly how you feel about things in explicit detail, how maligned and hassled you are. Every day you have a chance to curse everyone, to rant and rave, to let go of anger and frustration on the pages.

What we put our attention on grows stronger in our lives. Dont just focus on difficulties and failures in your journal. Every night, write down at least one nice, positive thing that happened during the day; a compliment, time out to look at the clouds, a kindness shown you.

Rather than concentrating on how bad things are, focus on the fact that they could be much worse. Psychiatrists call this downward comparison. You think of someone worse off not to gloat, but to gain a new perspective on your situation and new understanding about how to cope.

My time for doing so: I have had a free lunch today. I have been told that I am charming. Work is smooth-running. Anis touched my face with her tiny hands.

i need a rest.

at times of difficulties

Prayer and endless prayer. Our body is perhaps painful, our mind may remain tranquil. Think of the good old times we have had with all those around us. A worry-free childhood. School days. Falling in love and getting married. Job after job. We become more knowledgeable and accumulate some riches on earth. Parenthood. Grand-parenthood. Problems we have encountered and overcome. Exams. New & challenging tasks. Decisions to make that warrant hesitation and regrets one way or the other. Fun. Laughters. Surprises. Pleasant or unpleasant.

Indulge in memory of our family and friends. How children grow up. How we get promoted from one rank to another. Achievement of this sort and that. How we bid farewell to those familiar faces. How we experience illnesses of various nature. And you are still here, in this amazing world.

Breathe deeply and get prepared for some severe tests. Look forward to walking with us for leisure, charity or simply sweating.

Sunday, October 18, 2009

Prayer for you

When all is said and done, leave everything to God. He rules us all. If you can, remain calm and optimistic; if not, shed as much tears as you want. You may imagine upon your recovery, we shall have tea and picnics and dinner. On the other hand, you may make whatever arrangement that would put your mind at ease.

Go ahead! Support from family and friends and colleagues is always there with you.

Sunday breakfast, pingpong and mj at Miranda's home.

Where are you, Min?

wednesday lunch

We all gave support to our friend for good health and speedy recovery.

I attended a workshop yesterday about positive thinking and happiness. Interesting.

After work, I went to Central to buy 3 boxes of goose liver sausages. Pa likes it so much.

busy Monday - 6 meetings

Prayer for our friend.

My stomach has not yet fully recovered.

Anis has found me a stranger since I came back from England. Not sure when we can rebuild our relationship like before.

The Hokkaido milk ice-cream at B2 Sogo is very very delicious. I must buy some home.

I like the new blanket. I have ordered a new sofa - buffalo skin - pale wasabi colour.

Min has made friends and is contented with the Uni environment.

dont ask "why me?"

It has happened and you have to face it. As you have gone through occasions of hardship before, make it no exception today. I know it is painful. Anxieities kill and it is more difficult for the second time. We have grown older and weaker. What supports you to go on? Just the value of life itself. Your family members whom you love and friends whom you think worthy of seeing again.

Mine are not empty words. We all pray for you and will keep you company if you permit.

No one can escape illness & death. It may be cruel but you have to have faith & courage.

Best best regards!

I slept until 1130 am and then woke up for one minute. I then fell asleep again until 2 pm on Thursday. Moved about at home very slowly half awake. Met Ella before 5 pm. Lots of catch up.

Rosana had kindly helped me to register for cancer walk. I like old folks and that is why.

I have got acquainted with 2 "new legs". Alice & Betsy. I have indeed joined the club of the retirees.

meeting Chinese friends from HK

Min has met some boys and girls from Hong Kong. She has enjoyed a delicious dinner cooked in a block nearby. Good start.

I will be seeing Su and have a mj game today.

Irene told me about a club called Helena May. See if I am interested to join it. Near HK Park. English. Restaurant for lunch tea & dinner. Rooms to let at very competitive rates. Sounds tempting to have somewhere in the vicinity to bring Anis there. Children library, too.

angels & demons

I saw it on the plane returning home. Tom Hanks is one of my favourite stars.

Glad to see Anis b again. She took some time before she could remember me.

Talked to Min on phone. She is doing well. She took a bus in Central Bus Station to Woking and changed for train there. Back to Guildford Station and then cab. About 20 pounds. A new route for her. She will be knowing this well very soon.

Missing her. She only ate a sandwich with egg mayo yesterday. I wonder when she will receive the parcel sent out to her.

Good for her to have one fresher week to get to know people and buildings and facilities. She will wok in the Lakeside Restaurant in uniform. Very serious. Costs me another 80 pounds.

The Prince of Wales Theatre

Wonderful time in Coventry Street, Picadilly Circus. All absurdities and puzzles are wrapped up in jolly songs and dances.

The moral is we can live joyfully even with all problems, uncertainties and disappointments.

Happiness is always there. Friendship and love keep us afloat.

Entertainment!

We had lunch at Tokyo Restaurant at Leicester Square.

Mamma Mia!

Much tempted to see the comedy this evening. I just do not want to wait until 3 or 4 years later.

Not everybody on earth live up to 60 or 70. Is it a degradation to call someone "old"? Or is it a compliment to say someone has outlived many and probably been getting wiser? Women are more sensitive to age. Not sure of men.

Doing nothing is de luxe in a metropolitan city like London. I enjoy doing nothing, talking to nobody and hanging around in shops or strolling in quiet streets. A must in our lifetime.

It is a blessing that I treasure!

les miserables

Breakfast at The Muffin Man.

Lunch at the China Town. Vegetables are so expensive here. Beard Papa for a drink.

Shopping around at Oxford Circus in the afternoon. Dinner at Soho, a Mexican restaurant - tortilla wrapped with chicken and beef with salsa.

The musical was in Queen's Theatre, Shaftsbury Avenue. Min's listening power has excelled her Mom's. I prefer "The Phantom of the Opera".

bugis street brasserie

On 20th, We took 4 hours' cab from Bethany to Nottingham. Lorraine met us at the registration point. Winki & Wenbang just live in the 2 blocks side by side. One Hollies and one Rowans. We had dinner at a Chinese restaurant nearby. Min stayed there and I stayed with Lorraine at the Britannia. There are 3 boys from Mainland China and 1 English boy with Wenbang. Nottingham has a population of 33,000 students and about 4,ooo staff. Double that of Surrey, more or less.

On the 21st, Lorraine and I had breakfast at a small restaurant called The Bank. Min joined us later. We took a walk at the city centre. My loving sis bought 2 traveller bags, made in France, one beige for me and one bluejeans for herself. Thrilled to have the gift. Lorraine bought a frill scarf from Marks & Spencer but found the hairs falling. So she returned it and got refunded. The system is good. However, there must be people who abuse it, say, girls after wearing the gowns and dresses in balls & parties return them for full refund.

We had lunch again in a Chinese restaurant. Dim sum and roast pork/char siu. We are hopelessly fond of Chinese food.

Another 4 hours' coach back to the Victoria Station. Cab back to Copthorne Tara. Dinner at the Bugis Street - a restaurant in the hotel providing Singaporean and Malaysian food. We had Hainan chicken rice, Singaporean laksa and stir-fried vegetables with shrimp paste.

Lorraine took underground for Heathrow.

I woke up early this morning washing clothes. Another day in London. See what we will have.

Cool! I am blogging in Min's MacBook Pro.

My prayer for family members and those whom I care for.

Anis b knows to mutter dad-dad and mama but Van thinks she does not know the meaning nor identity of parents yet. I miss Baby.

hi

All the way back to Kensington. Dined with Lorraine and walked her to the underground. Missing her so much. Each time we part, we are so sentimental.

Maidstone & Bethany

I asked Presland, "Min a good girl?" She smiled and said, "Most of the time. No child is good all the time." I like her saying that. Nobody is good all the time. We are all torn or worn somewhere and have dark sides hidden.

Now I am in the very room that Min lived when she was admitted two years ago. She spent one year here. The girls are giggling and chatting incessantly to catch up. They left me here and went into the next room for the exchanges that are not permissible to Mom.

The Best Western Russell Hotel in Maidstone is a quiet and old-fashioned place. Min & I had a walk after breakfast along the road outside. Tranquility. Should I spend my retirement life in such a quiet environment.

I called Lorraine this morning and Porpor, too. We will depart from Bethany by a cab at 1 pm, go straight to Nottingham. Lorraine & Wenbang will wait for us around 4 pm. Wenbang will live in the dorm. Min shares a room with Winki and me with Lorraine.

All 4 in HK had contracted swine flu. 2 boys have recovered with Mike & Maria still taking medication. Porpor worries about Gungung and cannot go over to take care of Anis b. The punishment is so unfair on her.

Leicester Square

Breakfast again in The Muffin Man Tea Restaurant. Winki came all the way from Heathrow to join us. We then shopped around and then met Tiffany and Davy in a restaurant in Chinatown. She is going to study in Reading. Now I am in Bethany School. Imagine that is 2 years ago that I brought Min here. Cab to the Charing Cross Station, then train to Marden and cab again.

I need to stop multiplying every sterling pound by 12 or 13 mentally. I met Mrs Presland again.

We will stay in Maidstone tonight. Could not book Star & Eagle. I am so pleased I can use Ching's notebook free. Internet assess is so costly in Central London.

London

17th September:

Flew the whole day, watched several movies, I liked "The Proposal". Slept like a log after check-in. Woke up at 1030 pm and went out to buy a quarter pounder from McDonalds in High Street. That was our dinner.

18th September

B/fast at the Muffin Man Tea Shop. Went to buy tickets for the play "The
Mouse Trap" at Leicester Square. Knightsbridge - Harvey Nichols, H & M and Harrods - a must. Yo Sushi and the Starbucks. 730 pm to 945 pm at St Martin's Theatre. It was recommended 2 years ago. We only saw it this time. We had soup at a restaurant in Chinatown.

Both Min & I know the time of gathering is so precious. We are closer to each other than any time. Winki will come tomorrow morning.

dont sweat the small staff ..... and it's all small stuff

Simple ways to keep the little things from taking over your life.

Quoting:

"The quality of patience goes a long way toward your goal of creating a more peaceful and loving self. The more patient you are, the more accepting you will be of what is, rather than insisting that life be exactly as you would like it to be."

"To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live in the present moment. Irrespective of what happened yesterday or last year, and what may or may not happen tomorrow, the present moment is where you are - always."

"Make peace with imperfection. The need for perfection and the desire for inner tranquility conflict with each other."

"Whenever we are dealing with bad news, a difficult person or a disappointment of some kind, most of us get into certain habits, ways of reacting to life - particularly adversity - that dont serve us very well. We overreact, blow things out of proportion, hold on too tightly, and focus on the negative aspects of life."

"Be grateful when you are feeling good and graceful when you are feeling bad."

Eggs Benedict in a Club

A breakfast to be remembered.

Meetings - one after the other. The whole morning and the whole afternoon.

Cyclone no 8 hoisted around 6 pm.

Dinner at V's place.

See how it is tomorrow.

Inglourious Basterds

Morning walk in Quarry Bay Park. Fresh experience. Big breakfast. Between the sea and some trees. Breeezy and fine. Nice view. There is a fire boat museum. I must tell Pa about this.

Quentin Tarantino re-directed the 1978 film "The Inglorious Bastards". All for Brad Pitt. Not handsome but real cool. Heavily accented. Christoph Waltz played the role of Colonel Landa - the Jew Hunter. Dunno know much about the Nazi stuff. Cant evaluate the plot as compared to the history. Min likes the film very much. She is forever the intelligent and cheerful movie-goer.

World War II like any war was cruel.

the taking of pelham 123

Terrific. Denzel Washington & John Travolta.

A hero may not necessarily a saint. He makes mistakes & has faults. He just happens to do something at the split of a second to make his conscience more at ease.

We like it.

Dr Tong works magic.

a time to be silent & a time to speak.

Brothers Bloom - Prague Castle

Adrien Brody & Rachel Weisz. (An escape from burdens of life which screaming cannot help to relieve.) A group of con artists. The golden rule not to be broken is falling in love with the mark. Brody does. Weisz loves him even after she discovers the setup. Love could happen in the most unbelievable situation. It is a happy ending - Bloom eventually gets what he wants: Penelope.
It is a romantic comedy. Min finds Penelope too foolish. She is a lovely little girl who is yet to learn more about life.

stag hill and stag party

I went to see the movie "Hangover" with Min. That is exactly a story of a stag party. Life could be as messy and absurd as the story goes.

We have slips, errors and blindness at times. We have stupidity and fun at great expense. Min enjoyed the movie tremendously. She likes all kinds of mishaps. She thinks it is real. Simply a matter of facing them. She is philosophical.

Angels without wings

It is a blessing in any event to have someone to talk to, someone to share our problems and worries. Our laughters and our interestintg chats make our lives cheerful.

Good friends are angels without wings. They cushion us from hurts. They support us when we are down. They appreciate us for our strengths and understand us for our limitations.

You are one!

Inherit the Wind

Spencer Tracy & Fredric March & Gene Kelly.

Evolution v. Fundamentalist (Creation). How far should a man be permitted to speak out what he thinks? Are there good laws and bad laws? Do we give up blood relatives for our love? Do we give up our religion for our love? Must see again to digest such a heavy subject.

I had lunch with Grace. Nice food. Enjoyable company.

No work on Monday is like sneaking to a playground while the whole world is busy. So comfy.

To start a week fresh, sweet & gratifying with a breakfast with roses. Followed by pingpong and lunch with sis. Shopped around in TST. Min is coming home with Winki.

Min will come home tomorrow afternoon. I miss her!

Al Fahidi Fort

It was built in 1799, the oldest existing building in Dubai, now part of Dubai Museum.
Min visited the Aqarium and had bought pistachios as presents upon return. She is obviously enjoying greatly. Lucky girl!

Dubai Knowledge Village

It was built to allow Universities to open branches & campuses in Dubai. Dubai has a diverse & multicultural society. the medium of instruction in public schools is Arabic with emphasis on English as a second langauge, while most of the private schools use English as their medium of instruction. Approximately 10% of the population has university or postgraduate degrees.
PS Jason broke his arm yesterday while cycling. He udnerwent an operation on the fractured elbow early this morning. Poor boy and poor grandparents!

Let the ball drop

Sit back and relax and enjoy a cup of tea and listen to some beautiful music. Do some reading. Forget about everyone and everything. This is a form of prayer and a time for us to be with God alone.

Reserve some energy, some sentiments and some praises for ourselves.

Learn to ignore. Learn to discard. Learn to laugh. Laugh unpleasant feelings away. Laugh off ill remarks from malicious people.

Love those who love you. Stay away from those who are nasty to you. Be indifferent to those who are indifferent to you. Share happiness with those who bring you happiness. Comfort those who support you when you are down. After all, we only live once. Treasue every moment!

rainy days

Wenbang is going to Nottingham in mid September. Lorraine will accompany him.

I will go with Min, too. See if we can meet.

Anis is cute. We all feel blessed with a lovely baby.

hot weather

It is a pleasure to walk and sweat by myself. I know it is a blessing. Just imagine some cannot walk due to various reasons. Some do not have a lovely playground nearby. So count the blessing.

It has been terribly hot.

To a friend: arrange for games and chats with us. You will feel better. Be more outspoken and forget about good marks and good comments from others. Too much pressure to be perfect. Be naughty sometimes and be care-free sometimes. We do not live for others. It is more so as we have completed quite a substantial part of our path.

Saturday, August 08, 2009

saturday morning walk

So pleasant. Walked alone. Sweating all over. Had dumplings for lunch. Chatted a lot with Min.

Shopped at Kai Tin wet market and ParknShop. Coffee at Mcdonald's. All the Coca-Cola glasses are sold out. Very popular.

Dinner at Van's place. Anis is very very cute. She fell asleep when the teacher taught them English in the baby class but was cheerful at tea time. She can drink with her own cup. She wore the school uniform.

No pingpong tomorrow. I will probably go to walk at Sai Tso Wan playground again. Refreshing and rejuvenating exercise.

west kowloon

Thursday: visit to west kowloon. Somebody found me interesting wearing high heels for site-visit. Dinner with K & Ella.

Friday: a sunny morning. I had a walk by myself enjoying the luxury of doing nothing. Simply breathe & stretch. It is absolutely a relaxation time wiping away all my griefs & worries in life.

Will be joining a farewell dinner for Agnes.

Min & I saw the movie "Overheard". 3 cool men. Lau is stylish and an excellent actor. Ng is handsome. Koo plays his role well. See if any one will win the academy.

It was a happy dinner. All laughters.

tropical cyclones

We had a farewell lunch for CK. A very good work partner for over 5 years.

AV & I have different feelings towards gale warnings. They want an extra rest day. I want everything go normal to save the troubles in resumptions.

Pacific Coffee & Starbucks relieve many tired souls from hard toil and provide sweet time & relaxation for friends & lovers.

Anis has been cool to me last night. How could a baby be cool?

Monday, August 03, 2009

meeting am & visit pm

Busy Monday. Is there a day that is not busy?

Chats on movies. Min bought a book on Monet as a birthday present. She is a thoughtful girl. She will be going to Dubai with Wingki.

I have been listening to HeiYazi. Angelic.

Sunday, August 02, 2009

in the heat of summer

Pingpong in the morning in QE Stadium. I walked to Causeway Bay by myself. Min joined me for lunch. Korean BBQ. We bought several books from Page One.

Tea at Gold Finch Restaurant. We will dine at Porpor's place. She will cook congee with crabs for me.

Global warming. Min asked whether the world would come to an end as the result of rising temperature. I do not know the answer.

I viewed a movie on the notebook for the first time. "Witness for the Prosecution" by Tyrone Power & Marlene Dietrich. Directed by Billy Wilder and based on Agatha Christie's hit London play. It is not unputdownable. It is "must chase to the end".

Hi-tech makes life more interesting.

Good Health! Good Luck & God Bless You!

Happiness, peace of mind, pleasurable company & interesting activities in daily life.

rainy morning

Limewire - Yahoo does not approve the download of it. Perhaps, it was Limewire that had introduced virus to my old HP harddisk.

Ollie was so daring to taste the stewed soy chicken feet. They took photos of his eating chicken feet. He must be the bravest amongst his peers. Very interesting. Min had taken the cable car at NgongPing 360.

Thinking of seeing Johnny Depp's new film - Public Enemies. I am his fan.

Guests this evening for dinner.

Shanghai Shanghai

4 women, each with pride & prejudice of her own. Living together or travelling together for 3 days & 2 nights. Dragonair & JW Marriott Hotel. Can't ask for more. Breakfasts were delicious and the view in bedroom and dining room was terrific. Servicing crew spoke very good English.

Day 1 - A taxi driver who was a crook gave us a counterfeit 50 RMB for the change. We were told that it was fake as we went to Da Niang Shui Jiao. Nanjing Road - shopping for silk clothes. Dinner at Super Brand Mall - Zhang Sheng Kee - Shanghainese cuisine. We were close to Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Shanghai World Financial Centre looked great. There will be World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. People are taught to queue. We had kiwi juice in Starbucks before we went back to hotel.

Day 2 - Yu Yuan Garden. Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao. We saw people drinking soup from a big dumpling with a drinking straw. I bought a black top with red flowers. I bought a necklace of red coral beads. Twisted strings. Shopping nearby. I went back to hotel to take a short rest. Evening at Xin Tian Xi. I bought a shoulder bag from Nine West - imitation snake skin - black white purple & grey. Dinner at Xinjishi. Then we went to Vue Pub in Hyatt on the Bund. Drinks & music. That is Shanghai, with foreigners entertained by young & wild girls. Cruise in Huangpu with beautiful lights around was down there.

Day 3 - Shanghai Museum. Wonderful place. We did not cover all. I went to ceramics, furniture, jade, calligraphy & paintings. I missed bronze. Perhaps for next visit. We bought Yunnan ham from San Yang Shop. I bought 2 packs of green tea pumkin seeds. The xiang fei zi was not found because it was not seasonal. Should wait until September. Lunch at Mao Restaurant of Sofitel Hotel. I bought a pair of scissors from Zhang Xiao Chuen just across the road. We picked up luggages from the hotel and went to Pudong Airport by cab.

2 husbands drove 2 cars to fetch the 3 women away. Maria would stay in Miranda's home. So I went up to a bus by myself.

A nice trip. We agreed, disagreed, compromised, argued or settled. We had group split when we needed to have different programmes. Mature women who respect each other most of the time but think the others were more stupid sometimes and treasure the company as a whole. That's it. I like Shanghai for its grand buildings and international status. I would like it all the more if people would be more honest & polite and traffic more orderly with drivers less dangerous.

a quiet Sunday morning

I have had a very deep sleep last night in the midst of a tropical cyclone.

I took out a crystal photo frame yesterday but find difficulties in cleaning the in-between surfaces where the photo should be. It cannot be cleaned by tissues or cloths. I soaked it in water and see if it can work. There may be water marks even if I put it upside down to dry now.

I have also got a S crystal brooch in the shape of a fan. The crystal beads are beautiful but the k-gold part had turned sort of rusty. The shop could not refine it. They said they would be maintaining the crystal only. Too expensive to be done in a jewellery shop. Hence, it just lies there.

Pingpong and then I had lunch with the in-laws.

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

heat of the summer

The air-con is either too cold when it is on or too stuffy when I turn it off. My office is never having controlled temperature. I have to be very careful not to catch a cold in such hot weather. Shawls or thin cardigans will be most useful. Water, too. Air-con and incessant talks on phone and seeing people make my throat dry. And my nasal allergy.

Thinking of Pa - his old age and illnesses must be something difficult to bear with. We all grow old unless we die young. So many illnesses & discomfort come along with old age. That is why Kam said getting a companion at old age means getting to nurse that someone. She is more on the negative side of seeing things.

Min is having lots of fun in her summer vacation. Van is feeding Anis with mashed fresh fruits like bananas and peaches.

Monday, July 13, 2009

wonton & dumplings noodles, congee w/pork liver & fish

One of the best times in life is to have a lunch in a leisurely manner. Chats on no serious topics. Nothing urging for decisions. Nothing panicking.

I had both lunch and dinner with Paus yesterday.

I am planning what clothes to be packed for my 3-days trips to Shanghai by the end of this month. Looking forward to strolling along the Whampoa with 3 friends.

Sunday, July 12, 2009

a fine sunday morning

No more tropical cyclone. Shady. I enjoy looking at the greens downstairs from the window in my room while working on the computer. It is a great comfort to be at home. Cozy. A hosue is not a home. A home is where my heart remains. Love makes a house a home.

Rosana has been sweet sending me some tips for good health. Good health starts with a mind at ease & determination & perseverance.

Pingpong this morning. A delicious breakfast to start with: a chopped boiled egg with mayonnaise, tomatoes pieces, black pepper & sea salt; a piece of sliced bread with butter; a big coffee. I remember the latte with Okinawa sugar in the Pokka Cafe.

I saw the movie with Min at APM Palace - "Written by". All I like is Lau Ching-wan. That is all. The plot is sort of going wild. Dinner at Por's home.

Friday, July 10, 2009

a friend in need is a friend indeed

Thursday - Ed has been rendering me assistance over the years. Min dined out and saw movie. Van had dinner with her friends. She brought along Anis who was nervous to see strangers and cried.

Excited to go with Miranda, Maria & Su Tang for a short trip to Shanghai 25-27 this month. I visited the region with 2 sis around 1997. The city has since changed a great deal.

Friday - There is a dinner party hosted by 20 this evening. I cannnot join the farewell dinner for Dr Chong.

Wednesday, July 08, 2009

the Beijing Club

Rush rush rush with piles of reports in the tray.

Min has had an enjoyable time with new acquaintances at a place for the young generation.

Everything in my youth has become historical. Here I am, working hard for a livelihood. For a long long time, I have never found letters in my mail box except bills. Letters are gifts from wonderland. It is more so if letters are well written with pleasure and sentiments, interesting and inspiring.

Heat & humidity have dominated the whole city. Have people turned madder as a consequence?

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

Students reunion

Min has a reunion dinner with UK schoolmates on Monday at Coffee Too. Phototaking in the Peak. So exciting and gleeful. Youth is invaluable.

Tuesday: I have sent the book "The Associate" by John Grisham to Wenbang by air mail this morning. $83.70 air freight. I hope he will enjoy reading it after his return from Malaysia.

A will go to Korea today for 3 days as business trip.

Lunch at HKCEC. Leisurely and comfortable. The Victoria Harbour is still attractive to me.

Sunday, July 05, 2009

Habitu

Lunch with AVA and Min at Habitu, TST.

Hot. Lots of people in the arcade.

Andrew said I looked "pro" in the tee.

Dinner at Porpor's home. Gungung was so glad to see Min.

Rainy Saturday n Sunday

Susan's place with Tao & Fu. A relaxing & comfortable home for a retiree. She has raised one more she dog other than Garbie.

Pingpong.

I should be more self-disciplined to refrain from hard, fat & spicy food. Whatever too cold & too hot would be bad to the throat. Allergic.

MJ still remains the talk of the whole world. I watched an interview at Pearl the other evening. So abnormal a life since childhood. He never grew up as a man. Neverland. A puzzle. The 3 children will be the extension of a queer black King of Pop? Like the daughter of Elvis? Lisa-Marie?

Sunday, June 28, 2009

a rainy Sunday

Pingpong at Victoria Park. It rained heavily after we had finished. As I forgot to bring an umbrella, both Marga & I got all wet under her tiny one.

We bought beef brisket in Causeway Bay - the storage shop.

Min joined me for lunch at Times Square. It is so amusing to hear her talk about her school life in UK.

Golden Finch Restaurant - so old-fashioned - back to 60s. We had toast with butter & syrup and also shrimps on toast. It was leisure time.

Seemingly, I have caught a cold. Not Swine Flu, I hope.

Friday, June 26, 2009

Michael Jackson & Farrah Fawcett died in LA

A dancer with the fanciest feet on the street. A singer with unspeakable charm. What he had and what he lost?

The blond Charlie's Angel.

One heart attack & one cancer.

Life is but this minute and today.

Dinner with families in APM.
